The House Of Horrors at The Modern Art Museum

Enthusiasts of horror movies and sordid stories in search of thrills, let yourself be tempted by the House of Horrors, as The Modern Art Museum of Paris will be offering a unique surprise for its new permanent exhibition.

The House of Horrors, conducted as part of the monographic exhibition Sturtevant 'The Razzle Dazzle of Thinking "in 2010 with the CRA, is the last major installation of the artist who died in 2014. The donation made by the artist complements the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, which now contains more than 10 000 works.

Simulating the horror of a ghost train funfair, allusions to Divine, the favorite actress of John Waters or Paul McCarthy mingle with traditional scenes bats, skeletons and Frankenstein that punctuate the journey the viewer. The House of Horrors explores uninhibited excess of our contemporary era dominated by the spectacle, violence and anti-intellectualism. The installation of the ghost train scale therefore notes that appearance of pure entertainment. Sturtevant accompanies visitors through a series of experiences of fear connected to each other in a fun way.

The museum pays tribute to Sturtevant for a whole year presenting this monumental work, both in its critical dimension as by its size of about 300 sqm. Thanks to the donation of the artist and his dealer Thaddaeus Ropac, The House of Horrors, shown in a space that will be dedicated to him, will be one of the key works of the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris.

Sturtevant has participated in numerous exhibitions in major international institutions, including the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart (1992), the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt (2004), the Whitney Biennial in New York (2006), the Consortium of Dijon (2008) or the Tate Modern in London (2009) and recently at the MOMA in New York in 2014 and Los Angeles MOCA in 2015. She won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2011 and 2013 she received the Prize "Kurt Schwitters" with The House of Horrors presented for the occasion at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, from September 2013 to February 2014.
